Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack 3 Weeks Before Your Due Date

Published June 2026  ·  5 min read

Three weeks before your due date is the right time to pack your hospital bag — not because you're likely to deliver early, but because having it ready eliminates one source of last-minute stress. When labor starts, the last thing you want to be doing is hunting for your insurance card and trying to remember where you put your phone charger.

Pack it at 37 weeks. Put it by the door. Stop thinking about it.

Here's everything that should be in it, organized by who it's for.

For Mom — Labor and Delivery

For Mom — Postpartum Recovery

Note on postpartum supplies: Most hospitals provide pads, mesh underwear, ice packs, and basic toiletries. Ask your hospital what's provided before overpacking — the postpartum recovery kit from the hospital is often better than what you'd bring yourself.

For Baby

The hospital provides diapers, wipes, swaddle blankets, and feeding supplies during your stay. You don't need to pack these.

What to Leave at Home

Overpacking is a common mistake. You'll be using a small fraction of what you bring, and anything you forget can almost always be retrieved or purchased. Leave at home:

The Car Seat Is Non-Negotiable

Hospitals will not discharge a newborn without a properly installed car seat. Have it installed and inspected before your due date — many fire stations and police departments offer free car seat inspections. This is not something to figure out in the parking lot after discharge.

One More Thing

Pack the bag, put it by the door, and let yourself stop thinking about it. The mental overhead of "I still need to pack the hospital bag" is disproportionate to the task itself. Three weeks out is early enough to be calm about it and close enough that nothing in the bag will be sitting unused for too long.
